The uniforms for Space Jam: A New Legacy are appallingly bad.
LeBron James may be a better actor than Michael Jordan, but this is why you don’t mess with a classic like Space Jam.
Hopes are high for Space Jam: A New Legacy, the sequel to the 1996 live action/animated comedy starring MJ, Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes. In the original, Jordan is abducted by the Bugs, Daffy Duck and the rest of those lovable Warner Bros. cartoon characters so he can help them beat the aliens from Moron Mountain in a basketball game and avoid enslavement.
Was it a critically-acclaimed cinema classic? Hell no, as that plot synopsis probably gave away already. But it holds a special place in the hearts of ’90s children everywhere, and it did spawn some of the coolest Michael Jordan jerseys of all time: the classic white Tune Squad uniforms that look fresh no matter whose name is on the back — Jordan, Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny, you name it.
Unfortunately, even if the upcoming reboot is a better film with superior acting on LeBron’s part, the uniforms look absolutely atrocious:

The uniforms for Space Jam 2 are an abomination
Seriously, who sanctioned these? Who looked at this combination of turquoise and red-orange and thought, “Hmm, yeah, that looks good!” These embody all the goofiness of ’90s NBA jerseys, only instead of being vintage throwbacks, they’re more fit for the dumpster.
You can see what the designers were going for with the burnt-orange rings on the side, which implement the Looney Tunes’ “That’s All, Folks!” logo. But these look like a rejected jersey design for the Flint Tropics of Semi-Pro, not an update to what was a simple, understated, classic look from the original Tune Squad unis.
Seriously, all they had to do was just swap to the away colors of the original design, with a slightly updated, more modern look, and nobody would’ve complained about it. Just picture the original Tune Squad jersey in black instead of white, and tell me this catastrophic blend of turquoise, orange and dark blue lettering is somehow better.
Jerseys always look better in action, so maybe they’ll look slightly better once the movie releases some time in 2021. But if this first look is any indication, the Space Jam sequel is off to a less than inspiring start on the costume design front.
