Padres players bring up other unwritten rule defending Fernando Tatis Jr.
Padres players are defending Fernando Tatis Jr. over a dumb controversy.
A silly MLB controversy arose Monday night after Fernando Tatis Jr. launched a grand slam in the eighth inning of the San Diego Padres‘ big win over the Texas Rangers. The shot came on a 3-0 count and the Rangers decided to get angry instead of just being better.
A pitch was thrown behind Manny Machado and that became a whole story instead of just celebrating Tatis’ big two-homer night. An “unwritten” rule was broken and fans once again saw genuine excitement get punished.
But it turns out, Tatis and his teammates were dealing with another unwritten rule being broken by the Rangers.
Fernando Tatis Jr. took on another rule-breaker
So where does this leave us? Tatis is getting all this criticism because he got the best of a pitcher and hit a grand slam. A pitcher who, as it turns out, was breaking his own rule by throwing sliders down in the count while his team was facing a huge deficit.
The main takeaway here is that these “rules” need to go away for good. There are so many that fans didn’t even know one was being broken on the mound as well.
More players like Tatis who are playing with excitement on the field should help usher in a new era of baseball where players don’t have to act like they work in a quiet office. The most recent World Baseball Classic provided fans with some of the most exciting baseball seen in a long time because the players showed off their personalities.
Tatis is one of the best young players in the game and ended up breaking an unwritten rule while one was simultaneously being broken. That cancels both out, right?
Some advice for the Rangers is to simply play better baseball if they don’t want the score run up on them.
