Army will play BYU in 2020 and 2032 in a home-and-home series.

It can be difficult for independent college football teams to scrap a schedule together in non-pandemic situations, but the coronavirus-altered 2020 season has made it tough for these schools, of which Army and BYU both number, to stitch together the required amount of games. Both of these teams will face off against one another after agreeing to a home-and-home series.

Kalani Sitake and the BYU Cougars will take on Jeff Monken and the Black Knights in West Point in 2020, with the second leg of this two-game series to be played in Provo in 2032.

Both Army and BYU are coming off of disappointing seasons but hope for a better 2020 football season

Monken led Army to a 29-10 record with three straight bowl wins between 2016 and 2018, but the Knights slumped to 5-8 in 2019, even losing to Navy for the first time since 2015. Sandon McCoy might take over the pivotal fullback role in Army’s triple-option, and his powerful running style could cause problems for the BYU defense.

Despite some palpable excitement around the program, Sitake and the Cougars have gone 14-12 over the last two years. They are 1-1 in bowl games, and once again failed to beat rivals Utah. That record isn’t terrible, but it could’ve been a lot better given the NFL talent on the roster. Quarterback Zach Wilson might have plenty of arm talent, as evidenced during the last two seasons, but he might need to fight for his job in 2020.

Army will open the season against Middle Tennessee State, while BYU will take on Navy.

Independents were hit hard by several conferences either canceling football or putting unique restrictions on who and where they can play, but Army and BYU are making the best of this situation by locking horns with each other in what should be one of the more interesting stylistic contrasts in the 2020 college football season.
