Don’t ever put pineapple on Mike Leach’s pizza because he is opposed to it.

Mike Leach likes pizza, pineapple, but definitely not pineapple on a pizza.

When “The Pirate” made his way from Pullman, Washington to Starkville, Mississippi by way of Key West, Florida, we knew we were in for a treat. The former Washington State Cougars and Texas Tech Red Raiders head football coach had great success in his two previous stops. Now he has a chance to win big with the Air Raid using top-tier SEC football talent. Look out, SEC West.

On late Wednesday afternoon, Leach shared a video on Twitter of him discussing the always important culinary topic of does pineapple belong on a pizza? “I’m against it,” said Leach. “I’m staunchly opposed. It’s my mom’s favorite kind of pizza, ham and pineapple.” Just prepare yourself from the next greatest, iconic, long-winded answer from “The Pirate” himself. Enjoy.

Now that he has pizza figured out, can Mike Leach figure out the SEC West?

For a man who has eaten a lot of pineapples, not necessarily because he likes it and in fact has grown pineapple trees before because it’s easy, it’s pretty clear the Air Raid disciple has already figured out how to attack the defense of those who enjoy themselves a Hawaiian pizza every so often. With his pizza takes set, is Leach ready to make some noise in the SEC West at Hail State?

It will be a baptism by fire for all four first-year SEC head coaches this season. Leach, Eliah Drinkwitz of the Missouri Tigers, Lane Kiffin of the Ole Miss Rebels and Sam Pittman of the Arkansas Razorbacks, not only have to figure out what their new teams are about, but have to play 10 SEC games in the midst of a season perpetually complicated by the ongoing coronavirus.

For that reason, it’s hard to see the Mississippi State Bulldogs doing any better than a fifth-place finish in the SEC West this year. Look for them to be ahead of Arkansas and maybe Ole Miss if Mississippi State wins the most fascinating Egg Bowl of our lifetimes. Army-Navy may be an elite standalone game rich in tradition, but are you ready for Leach vs. Kiffin Egg Bowls going forward?

Leach won many games at Texas Tech and Washington State, so look for him to do the same here.
