Browns’ Kevin Johnson hospitalized with lacerated liver

The sixth-year corner was involved in a scary moment at practice, resulting in him being hospitalized.

The Cleveland Browns had a very serious and frightful moment at practice Wednesday.

Their cornerback Kevin Johnson, who signed with the team this offseason, suffered a lacerated liver after a player fell on him.

Johnson was admitted to University Hospitals where it was determined that he suffered the abdominal injury. He is resting there and will be there for at least the next 24 hours for observation.

The Browns signed the former Wake Forest Demon Deacon to fill their need at the nickel cornerback slot. The team lost T.J. Carrie and Eric Murray in the offseason, so Johnson is slated to be the replacement.  Johnson has been having a solid camp before the injury, playing with the first-team defense and making plays when he is on the field.

Johnson does have a history of injuries dating back to 2016. He has dealt with a foot injury in 2016, causing him to miss ten games. A knee injury made him miss four games in 2017. He also suffered a concussion in Week 1 of 2018, and he never returned to the field after that. 2019 was his first time playing in all 16 games since his rookie year.

Even though he is projected to be a part of the nickel package for Cleveland, Johnson has played primarily as an outside corner for his career. In 2019, quarterbacks completed less than 60 percent of their passes when targeting Johnson. Last season with the Buffalo Bills, he had 36 combined tackles, five passed defended, and one tackle for loss.

It has been undetermined how long the first-round pick will be out. He might be out for two months, even more depending on how serious the laceration is. The details of the severity of the injury have not been disclosed.
