Manchester United can help Chelsea hero revive his career
Manchester United and Chelsea don’t do much transfer business together, but N’Golo Kante could really benefit from a move to Old Trafford.
N’Golo Kante’s move to Leicester City to Chelsea back in 2016 allowed the Blues to secure the top spot in the Premier League. A 2020 switch from Chelsea to Manchester United might help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad to make the same kind of leap.
According to The Mirror, officials at Old Trafford are considering making an offer for the French midfielder. Kante’s inability to secure a regular place in Frank Lampard’s starting XI makes it obvious that he’s surplus to requirements at Chelsea moving forward. It’s highly unlikely the Blues would turn down a sizeable offer for the 29-year-old.
What could N’Golo Kante do for Manchester United?
United are working diligently this summer to identify the perfect midfield setup to get the best out of both Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes is locked in as the club’s No. 10 of the present. His arrival at Old Trafford led to a sharp uptick in the club’s form last season.
The question then becomes how to get Pogba firing on all cylinders at the same time. The French phenom is at his best when he’s given the license to run forward and become a goal-scoring threat. That means United has to pair him with a defensive-minded midfielder to make sure their back four aren’t left exposed.
Kante is perfectly suited to sit back and shield his team’s back four. Even during his younger days at Chelsea, he rarely burst forward into the final third with the ball at his feet. His best work comes when he’s breaking up an opposition attack and shuttling the ball forward for his playmakers to harm opponents on the counter-attack.
That makes Kante an ideal pairing for Pogba in United’s double-pivot. He would be a significant improvement over Nemanja Matic in the club’s starting XI. He lacks the size to dominate opponents in the air, but Kante’s sublime ability to read the game allows him to overcome any concerns about his lack of stature.
If United do want to get a deal done, they’ll need to come to Chelsea with a strong offer. Even a manager as confident as Frank Lampard will think twice about dealing a talented player to an English rival. Even so, the Blues want to get younger and more dynamic this summer. Getting a solid fee for Kante could help Chelsea continue their squad overhaul. United should take advantage of their rivals’ need for cash.
