The Mets-Yankees series has been postponed due to COVID-19.

The first Subway Series of the year was supposed to be must-see TV, as the banged-up New York Yankees looked to reverse their fortune against a New York Mets team that suddenly got hot during a series against the rival Miami Marlins.

After a member of the Mets tested positive for COVID-19, their series against the Yankees was postponed until a later date. The Mets’ next scheduled game is on Tuesday against Miami, while the Yankees will take on the Atlanta Braves on that same day.

The Mets had a positive COVID-19 test after a series against the Miami Marlins.

One of the reasons that pitcher Marcus Stroman used to opt-out of the 2020 season was his trepidation about playing in Miami, where coronavirus cases are still high and the city’s baseball team was shut down for over a week due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Those concerns have been justified, as the Mets will have to cancel games as a result of this positive test.

The MLBPA’s testing plan showed that there were seven new cases within the league for the period ending Aug, 20. Three of the positive results were players, while five were personnel with the major league club. While that low positivity rate is encouraging, that doesn’t change the fact that the lack of an MLB bubble has made it almost impossible to eradicate the virus from the league.

Mets fans have to be disappointed with the fact that their momentum was blunted due to a positive test, but the MLB is correct in being overly cautious and putting the series on hold until the risk of spreading the virus is nullified. The Subway Series will likely be an abridged series to be made up at a later date as this unusual 2020 season marches on.
