Most MLB teams expect a relatively quiet trade season, but the Red Sox are one team that is open for business for teams looking to add talent.

It’s no secret the 2020 season hasn’t gone according to plan for the Red Sox. It was natural that parting with big stars like Mookie Betts and David Price was going to usher in a new era of baseball in Boston. That doesn’t mean the organization expected to fall out of contention so quickly.

The upside to that reality for the Red Sox is that they can aggressively try to retool their roster ahead of this year’s Trade Deadline. Officials around MLB expect a relatively quiet market due to the sheer number of teams that are still in contention due to the truncated season and expanded playoffs.

That gives the Red Sox, as one of a handful of clear sellers, a unique opportunity to capitalize on the number of buyers in the market. That’s precisely why Boston is already discussing a potential move that would send Brandon Workman to the Phillies.

The idea that Workman is being made available is no surprise. He’s a 32-year-old reliever who can help a contender now, but doesn’t really fit into the window of contention for the next great Red Sox team. The Phillies see him as an arm who can help win them an extra game or two down the stretch. He could be able to do that for Boston, but they’re in no position to profit from that type of performance.

The only surprise regarding the current talks with the Phillies is that the deal could end up encompassing quite a few additional players. It’s possible that Philadelphia wants to secure another veteran or two from Boston. Adding a potential closer like Workman would be the centerpiece of the trade, but the Phillies could be looking for more value.

dark. Next. Trouble is brewing between Yankees and J.A. Happ

Expect the Red Sox to move Workman and several of his teammates before the month is out. Boston needs to do everything they can to accelerate their rebuild.
