Washington cuts Randy Moss’ son to make room for former first-round pick

Thaddeus Moss’ stint in Washington was short lived

One of the many shocks of the 2020 NFL Draft was the fact that LSU tight end Thaddeus Moss, son of Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss, went undrafted. Moss wasn’t on the open market for long, as he quickly signed a deal with the Washington Football Team hours after the conclusion of the draft. His stint in DC lasted a grand total of four months.

On Friday, Washington waived Moss to sign former San Francisco 49ers offensive guard Joshua Garnett, who was a first-round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Moss’ NFL journey hindered by injury

Moss played in two seasons with the LSU Tigers, with this past campaign being historic for the program, thanks in part to the play of quarterback Joe Burrow. Through 12 games last season, Moss recorded 47 receptions for 570 yards and four touchdowns, but more importantly, became a National Champion.

After declaring for the NFL Draft, the expectation was that Moss would be selected at some point during the event. Those hopes were dashed at the NFL Scouting Combine, as a physical revealed that Moss had a Jones fracture in his right foot. Moss was held out of the event and had to undergo surgery to repair it. If he never fractured his foot, who knows where Moss could’ve ended up and which round he would’ve been selected.

As for Washington, they brought in Garnett to add to the offensive line’s depth chart. That depth is more important than ever, especially with Trent Williams no longer with the organization. Garnett was recently cut by the Detroit Lions earlier this month.

Now, it’s back to the drawing board for Moss. Maybe he rejoins his LSU quarterback with the Cincinnati Bengals. Or, he could join his pops’ former team in the New England Patriots or Minnesota Vikings. No matter the case, a team is no doubt going to give him a shot, but it may be as a member of their practice squad.
