Brewers DFA former Red Sox fan favorite Brock Holt

The former Boston Red Sox utility man has been designated for assignment

The Milwaukee Brewers have shown over the years that they’re not wary of making deals with the Boston Red Sox and bringing in their former players. Back in 2016, the team traded for former Boston third baseman Travis Shaw, but the experiment lasted for three seasons. A former Red Sox utility man’s stint with the Brew Crew has officially lasted a grand total of six months.

On Saturday, the Brewers announced that they have designated Brock Holt for assignment. In a corresponding move, Milwaukee recalled Jace Peterson from their alternate training site.

The flyer on Holt didn’t last too long

This offseason, the Brewers took a shot on Holt, who sat on the open market for a couple of months. Holts’ contract with Milwaukee was for one-year, worth $3.25 million and included a club option for the 2021 season.

After the delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Holt finally took the field with his team at MLB’s July start time. Holt played in 16 games with the Brewers, and went 3-for-30 with one home run and a single RBI. Additionally, Holt owned a .222 on-base percentage and a measly .100 slugging percentage.

Holt’s horrible start wasn’t expected by the Brewers. This is a guy who slashed .270/.340/.374 while hitting 23 home runs and 203 RBI in his seven seasons with the Red Sox. Not to mention he’s a two-time World Series Champion, a 2015 All-Star and became the only player to hit for the cycle in MLB postseason history in 2018! The signing appeared to be great in hindsight, but it just never worked out like the Brewers intended.

The decision to move on from Holt comes as Milwaukee (11-13) sit 4.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs for first-place in the NL Central as of this writing. Something had to be done, hence why the team called up Peterson to try to gain ground on the Cubbies.

Who knows what the future will hold for Holt. Maybe a reunion with the Red Sox? That would certainly cheer up Boston’s fan base during their miserable 2020 campaign.
