The circumstances between the first and second meetings of Katie Taylor and Delfine Persoon were completely different in terms of atmosphere — but that didn’t include the fight result. Taylor has seemingly solidified herself as the greatest female boxer at women’s lightweight today with a win over Persoon, but not everyone in the boxing world appears to agree.

The two first met in front of a rambunctious New York crowd at Madison Square Garden on June 1, 2019, as part of the undercard for the first Anthony Joshua-Andy Ruiz Jr. clash.

The pair battled in an epically close encounter, with both getting their fair share of blows in, and that was reflected on the controversial scorecards.

One judge scored the original bout a 95-95 draw, while the other two scored it 96-94 in Taylor’s favor, giving Taylor all four major women’s lightweight titles in boxing, to the tune of protests from Persoon and several in the boxing community.

A rematch was demanded and highly anticipated, and it came on Aug. 22, but not in front of a large capacity crowd. Instead, it came at Matchroom Boxing’s Fight Camp, held at its England headquarters, as the co-headliner to the interim WBC heavyweight title bout between Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin.

Taylor dominated the opening two rounds, busting up Persoon’s face and leaving her bloodied on the cheek quite early on. Taylor’s defense was great against Persoon’s wild punches, but Persoon began to really connect midway through the fight and started to turn the tide a bit.

Persoon battled back hard in the middle rounds, connecting several times on the defending champ.

The scores were still fairly close, albeit but not as much as their first meeting. One judge scored the bout in Taylor’s favor with a 98-93 score, while the other two gave her bout 96-94.

Taylor now improves to 16-0 and furthers her claim as perhaps the best female boxer in the world today (especially in the aftermath of Cecilia Braekhus‘ first loss). Persoon, meanwhile, falls to 44-3, losing two of three fights for the first time in her career.
