49ers rookie wideout Brandon Aiyuk suffered a setback at training camp
San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk hurt his leg during practice on Sunday, potentially sidelining the Arizona State alum as the 2020 season quickly approaches. San Francisco selected Aiyuk at No. 25 overall after a productive year with the Sun Devils that showcased just how dangerous he is after the catch.
49ers reporter Chris Biderman broke the news or Aiyuk’s apparent injury, noting that the rookie “pulled up while running a deep route and grabbed the back of his left leg.”
Bad news from #49ers practice. Rookie WR Brandon Aiyuk, who has been arguably the team’s most productive wideout during camp, pulled up while running a deep route and grabbed the back of his left leg. He did not return to practice.

Expected to complement second-year man Deebo Samuel, who suffered a foot injury during the offseason, Aiyuk is clearly an important part of San Francisco’s long-term plans, and his health status will be worth monitoring. Biderman reported that he did not return to practice, and Ian Rapoport said that the injury is a hamstring pull.

Aiyuk’s injury would be another big blow to the 49ers receiving corps
With hamstring issues tending to linger throughout the season, head coach Kyle Shanahan would be wise to give Aiyuk time to rehab before rushing him back to the practice field. So much of his game depends on after-the-catch explosion, and a long-term hamstring problem could give him issues sticking to his play style.
Aiyuk looks to have a bright future following a strong senior year, and holding him out leading up to the regular season could pay dividends. If he can properly rehab and come in to contribute fully healthy, the rookie can add a dangerous element to Kyle Shanahan’s innovative offensive schemes.
