Deshaun Watson advocates for Earl Thomas on Twitter
Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson showed support for Earl Thomas on Twitter after he was released by the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson expressed his support for former Raven Earl Thomas after he was cut Sunday following a training camp altercation with teammate Chuck Clark on Saturday. Watson said that he respected Thomas and praised him for answering his questions out of a love for the game.
The star quarterback also said that he was surprised with the move, a reasonable statement considering the veteran safety’s impressive career to this point. Thomas is a three-time All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowler, and was a crucial piece of Seattle’s vaunted “Legion of Boom” secondary. Wherever he lands, he will likely be a major contributor.
Could the Texans be an Earl Thomas landing spot?
While Watson seems supportive of Thomas’ search for a new NFL home, it does not appear that the two will be teammates any time soon. Texans beat reporter John McClain reported that the team will not pursue Thomas, despite his newfound availability.
Thomas, however, appears likely to join Watson in the Lone Star State, per Adam Schefter. The 31-year-old has been connected to the Dallas Cowboys for years, and may be willing to take a pay cut to land with America’s Team.
A talent like Thomas is not likely to remain on the open market for long, but locker room fit may be a concern for some teams. After being dismissed from practice for fighting a teammate, potential suitors may be unwilling to gamble on a potential locker room problem.
The COVID-19 pandemic may complicate the former Raven’s search for a new team, but could be a difference-maker as teams look to make last-minute improvements before the season starts. However, while his teammates in Baltimore reportedly wanted Thomas gone, he clearly has Watson’s full support.
