Thiago Silva will leave PSG and join Chelsea.

Frank Lampard and Chelsea have been busy on the transfer market following a surprising 2019-20 campaign. While Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech have already donned their Chelsea blue, and Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Kai Havertz is inching closer towards a deal, Lampard still needed to improve upon a porous defense. He picked ut Thiago Silva, a PSG defender who has captained both the French giants and his country, as his preferred target, and Lampard will soon see his wish granted.

ESPN is reporting that after losing in the Champions League final to Bayern Munich, Silva will join Lampard’s Blues on a free transfer, ending an eight-year stint in Paris.

Thiago Silva has been one of the most reliable center backs in the world.

Chelsea had been looking at Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez and West Ham United’s Declan Rice as potential center back options, but Silva seemed too good to pass up.

Silva, who started his career in his homeland with Fluminese, moved to Milan in 2009, quickly becoming one of the best players on some terrific Rossoneri teams near the end of the decade. After moving to Paris Saint Germain in 2012, Silva has piled up an insane 23 trophies, including seven Ligue 1 titles.

Silva has made 315 appearances in all competitions for PSG, scoring 17 goals in the process. For his native Brazil, he has been capped 84 times. Silva was an integral part of two World Cup teams and a squad who won the Copa America in 2019. Even in his advanced age, his leadership was invaluable to PSG’s success domestically and abroad.

Even though he may be a little long in the tooth, Silva was the backbone of a team that trounced their Ligue 1 competition and came within a Kingsley Coman header of a Champions League victory. He should be a rock-solid, experienced option on the pitch and a leader off of it for Lampard’s young Chelsea squad.
