Jerry Jones claps back at report that Cowboys don’t want Earl Thomas
By John Buhler
If you thought the Dallas Cowboys weren’t interested in Earl Thomas, Jerry Jones has news for you.
Jerry Jones wants you to know that the gatekeeper of information in Dallas is no one other than himself.
Of course, this all has to do with former Baltimore Ravens safety Earl Thomas and whether or not he’ll be a fit on the Dallas Cowboys. Rapoport reported on Tuesday morning the Cowboys were out of the Thomas free agency sweepstakes. Less than an hour later, the Cowboys owner went on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas to completely ruin Rapoport’s reporting in one fell swoop.

Was it the emoji in Ian Rapoport’s tweet with that sent Jerry Jones off?
ESPN’s Ed Werder reported, the “Cowboys Owner/GM Jerry Jones says the first part of the Earl Thomas decision is to evaluate what they have on roster at that position. He said they’ve completed that phase and next would be to speak directly with Thomas and his agent. So Cowboys remain interested.”
Despite what reports may have been passed along on Tuesday morning, Jerry’s comments are music to the ears of Cowboys fans hoping the defense can add a star veteran to assist the team on a Super Bowl run. The 2020 NFL season doesn’t kickoff until Thursday, Sept. 10 when the Houston Texans take on the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead, so Jones and the Cowboys have time.
Ultimately, the Cowboys may not sign Thomas anyway, as he may prove to be too much of a risk at this point of the season. However, when Thomas is at his best, he is among the very best safeties in football. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler, a former All-Pro and the superstar free safety formerly of the Seattle Seahawks’ Legion of Boom secondary. He also has won a Super Bowl.
Thomas has expressed before his interests in playing for the Cowboys. He did so to former Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett when Thomas still played for the Seahawks. After spending one season with the Ravens, Thomas finds himself out of work on the wrong side of 30. He was a Pro Bowler last season, so we can believe he still has a good bit of ball left in the tank at this time.
Thomas may not be a Cowboy, but Jones isn’t ready yet to fully punt on the idea of bringing him in.
