The Cincinnati Bengals star running back out with mysterious injury

This season is the start of a new era for Cincinnati Bengals football.

The team believes they acquired their savior at quarterback in Joe Burrow, but the roster overall is still lacking. Yet, Burrow does have a running back in Joe Mixon to alleviate some of the pressure off of him. But that hasn’t happened this week in training camp.

According to media members at Bengals practice on Wednesday, Mixon wasn’t present on the field or on the sidelines. Back on Monday, Mixon was listed with a “minor” injury and sat out of practice on Tuesday.

Mixon has been pursuing a contract extension this offseason

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor could be holding out Mixon as a precaution, especially with the upcoming NFL season being clouded by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But, there’s also the fact that Mixon is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2020 campaign.

Reports earlier this year indicated that Mixon could hold out of training camp without a contract extension. Mixon didn’t do so, as he participated in practices. Earlier this month, Tyler Dragon of the Cincinnati Enquirer said that Mixon isn’t looking to reset the running back market. Instead, he’s looking to earn a deal that will pay him $8 million annually, which would put him in the top-eight in running back salaries.

Following his rookie season, the former second-round selection broke out these past two seasons, where he accumulated 2,305 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, while also catching 100 passes for 583 yards and four scores.

With Bengals practice still ongoing, we’ll likely get some sort of closure from Taylor during a media conference call in regards to whether the team is playing it safe with Mixon, or if he’s dealing with an injury that’s more serious than initially expected.
