How Lovecraft Country sheds light on the haunting history of sundown towns
By Mia Johnson
Author Morgan Jerkins comes on the Lovecraft Country Chronicles podcast to discuss her research on sundown towns.
Among the more thrilling chases, adventures and monsters Atticus, George and Letitia come across in Lovecraft Country, the three have faced more serious issues that have acted as a double-edged sword against them in this series.
It’s not just the monsters, but it’s the evil, highly prejudice people that they encounter along the way that really stops their plans. The first episode, in particular, set the tone for the series. Taking place in the 1950s, we already know that conditions weren’t the most ideal for Black people in the United States. And, as the show made apparent, these occurrences weren’t just happening in the American South, but the North as well.
We saw the pressure really put on the group when Atticus was forced to drive out of a sundown county before dark. For TV, it was a nail-biting, heart-stopping scene. But in reality, were the conditions to these “sundown” areas the way they were portrayed in the series? The Lovecraft Country Chronicles podcast invited to the show this week New York Times bestselling author Morgan Jerkins, who has done extensive research on the phenomenon. While writing her latest book Wandering in Strange Lands: A Daughter of the Great Migration Reclaims Her Roots, Jerkins came across some deep discoveries about the realities behind sundown towns.
Join us in today’s episode of Lovecraft Country Chronicles as we dig deeper through this disturbing history, how it relates to Lovecraft Country, and how it affects the future of America.
