Astros, Athletics walk off field after honoring Jackie Robinson [VIDEO]
The Astros and A’s took the field on Friday night to honor Jackie Robinson, then walked off.
Friday night’s game between the Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics is postponed, but not before both teams recognized Jackie Robinson Day with a powerful gesture in recognition of racial equality and justice.
The two teams came out onto the field wearing No. 42 jerseys in honor of Jackie Robinson, the legendary ballplayer who broke the color barrier in 1947. They paused for 42 seconds of silence. Then in unison, they left the field, sitting out the game in the wake of the Jacob Blake shooting.
Here’s how it played out on the broadcast:
The Astros and A’s are the latest teams to take action amid nationwide protests.
Houston and Oakland took their opportunity to make a statement on Jackie Robinson Day to end a week which has been full of protests and strikes.
While the Astros-A’s game appears to be the only game postponed for non-weather reasons on Friday, several other games this week have not gone forward.
Protests started on Wednesday when multiple teams followed the lead of the NBA in calling off games after the shooting of Blake by a police officer in Wisconsin. The Astros were one of those teams, sitting out their game against the Angels while the Brewers and Reds, Dodgers and Giants, and Mariners and Padres also called off games.
On Thursday, the Athletics and Rangers, Rockies and Diamondbacks, Red Sox and Blue Jays, Phillies and Nationals, Orioles and Rays, Twins and Tigers, and Marlins and Mets didn’t play as scheduled. The Seattle-New York game featured a similar gesture as the teams took the field and then departed.
All the games will be made up at a later time.
