The Boston Red Sox should still keep some players off the chopping block.
It’s been the worst season for the Boston Red Sox since literally the immediate aftermath of trading Babe Ruth. They currently have a .323 winning percentage this season, the worst they’ve had since 1932. The 1920s had a lot of similar winning percentages. Everything that could have possibly gone wrong has gone wrong. With a $177 million payroll and an empty stadium, the owners are not getting near what they are paying for.
That is obviously going to lead to the Red Sox trying to shed some of its big contracts at this year’s trade deadline. The deadline is this Monday, so there’s not a lot of time to figure things out for the Sox. However, it sounds like just about everyone is on the table if a team pays the right price.
This is what happens when you’re a .300 team. Clearly, what you’re doing isn’t working, so something has to give. That being said, the Red Sox shouldn’t take calls on everybody. There are some players on this roster that can make this team a contender sooner rather than later. Obviously, getting Chris Sale and Eduardo Rodriguez back next season will help immensely. This could be a better team before we know it, and the good young players on this roster will lead the next generation of Boston Red Sox baseball.
The Red Sox are going to trade fan favorites, star players, useful veterans, and just about everything that other teams deem worthy. There are a few players that teams are going to call about, but Brian O’Halloran and Chaim Bloom need to draw the line somewhere. These three players would be a good place to just say no.
