The Arsenal striker paid tribute to the “Black Panther” lead actor
Sports and entertainment often cross paths with each other, and that’s what happened on Friday evening, but under terrible circumstances. Actor Chadwick Boseman, who played the lead role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film “Black Panther” and portrayed Jackie Robinson in the biopic “42,” passed away at the age of 43 after a battle with Stage IV colon cancer. Tributes have rolled in from a plethora of athletes, and a soccer star honored the late actor on the pitch.
During the Community Shield match against Liverpool, Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a goal 12 minutes in. after putting the ball in the net, Aubameyang ran to the right side of the field and did the iconic “Wakanda Forever” pose in tribute to Boseman.
The sports world honors Boseman
Liverpool did tie the game 73 minutes in with a goal by Takumi Minamino and resulted in both squads heading to a shootout to determine the winner of the Community Shield. Aubameyang would play the hero by scoring the winning penalty shot.
The sports world was stunned to hear of Boseman’s passing. According to Boseman’s representative, the actor was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer back in 2016. Even with the prognosis, Boseman continued to act in films, such as “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “21 Bridges,” and “Da 5 Bloods.”
On Saturday, Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton did the “Wakanda Forever” pose while standing on top of his car and dedicated his race to Boseman. A variety of high profile athletes sent their condolences through Twitter as news of his passing broke, such as Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Indiana Pacers guard Victor Oladipo and Kansas City Chiefs signal caller Patrick Mahomes.
Expect to see plenty more deserving tributes to Boseman during games, who provided us all with entertainment as he fought for his life.
