Is Cam Akers the ultimate fantasy football sleeper as a rookie for 2020?

For whatever reason, Cam Akers is the least talked about rookie running back of his class. A blue-chip prospect coming out of high school, Akers starred for a lackluster Florida State Seminoles team in college. After three years in Tallahassee, Akers went pro, where he would be a second-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 NFL Draft. Can he be a fantasy darling this fall?

The Fantasy Footballers brought up the not-so-under-the-radar vibes anymore regarding Akers. With Todd Gurley now playing for the Atlanta Falcons and Darrell Henderson dealing with a hamstring injury late in fall camp, they believe Akers has the potential to be a huge fantasy player for the Rams right away. Can he be what Gurley was for the Rams at his NFL apex?

The good news for Akers is he now plays in an NFL offense that is both ground-centric and one that will take advantage of his skills as a runner. Though he may be part of a running back by committee once Henderson is healthy again, Akers might be able to take advantage from playing on a not as relevant college team during his time in school.

Will Cam Akers put up Todd Gurley numbers in Sean McVay’s Rams offense?

Looking around the rest of the league at promising rookie running backs, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, D’Andre Swift, J.K. Dobbins and Jonathan Taylor all played for teams that won their division last season and were on playoff-viable teams throughout their college tenure. Florida State barely achieved bowl eligibility when Akers was in Tallahassee, yet he is as talented at this quartet.

Akers did have two 1,000-yard rushing seasons in college, while Gurley only had one. Like Gurley, Akers proved in college he was a strong receiver out of the backfield, he could emerge as the bona fide bell-cow Gurley was in his first four years in the league with the Rams before seeing his snaps reduced last year in Los Angeles.

Overall, Akers has RB1 potential as a fantasy player. Odds are, he’ll be one of the performers where we’ll know very early if he’s got fantasy superstar written all over him or not. If he’s a close proximity to what Dalvin Cook was before him in Tallahassee, the Rams may have drafted their next elite running back in franchise history. They’ve had so many over the years, it’s ridiculous.
