10 greatest Philadelphia Eagles of all time
9. QB Randall Cunningham
He was a second-round pick from UNLV in 1985. And he was the transition from veteran quarterback Ron Jaworski, the club’s primary starter for 10 seasons and a huge part of Philadelphia’s 1980 Super Bowl team. Gifted Randall Cunningham spent 11 years in the City of Brotherly Love and there were certainly some ups and downs.
The 6-foot-4, 212-pound made his share of memorable plays. During his stay with the franchise, he threw for 22,877 yards, 150 scores and 105 interceptions. And when it came to using his legs, few ever did it better. With the Birds, he escaped the pocket (certainly not all by design) and soared through the air.
All told, Cunningham ran for 4,482 yards and 32 touchdowns. But he was also sacked an incredible 422 times in 122 regular-season outings. Under head coach Buddy Ryan, the team won the NFC East in 1988 and earned wild-card berths in both 1989 and ’90. Unfortunately, the club failed to win a playoff games in any of those years.
Cunningham and the Eagles were back in the postseason in 1992 and rallied for a playoff win at New Orleans. He retired after the 1995 season but resurfaced in ’97 with the Vikings and had quite the year in ’98. But he put together quite the highlight film for more than a decade with the Eagles.
