From the looks of it, seven teams have a great shot at winning the playoff this year in Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Texas Longhorns. If we want to make it a cool 10, let’s add the Texas A&M Aggies, the Auburn Tigers and the LSU Tigers. If we want to say who has a puncher’s chance, let’s add the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Four of these 11 teams will likely make up the four-team playoff field. After that, it starts to get pretty dicey. If you’re looking for a team not named Clemson or Alabama to win the national title, teams like Georgia, Florida, Notre Dame or Texas could be good picks. From a value standpoint, Florida, Notre Dame and Texas have to look pretty enticing, and so might Oklahoma State.

If we’re going to go with an ultimate dark horse here, how about Mack Brown’s North Carolina Tar Heels at 100/1 or Justin Fuente’s Virginia Tech Hokies? Clemson is the creme de la creme of the ACC, but after 2020 participant Notre Dame, the rest of the Power 5 conference is wide open. For now, you’re best off going with chalk in Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma and Georgia.

It sure feels like we’re destined again to get Alabama vs. Clemson V or whatever number we’re on.
