No. 9 quarterback in college football: D’Eriq King, Miami (FL)

In his last full year (2018) at Houston, D’Eriq King was one of the most electric and exciting college football players in the country. Though he was limited to 11 games due to some injuries, King still threw for 2,982 yards, 36 touchdowns and just six interceptions while also rushing for 674 yards and 14 touchdowns.

King’s 2019 season, however, was odd in virtually every regard. He had wild swings in performance seemingly on a snap-to-snap basis and then elected to end his season prematurely after four games, thus allowing him to retain one year of eligibility. That’s what has landed him with the Miami Hurricanes for the 2020 season where expectations for what he can do will be quite high.

Quarterback play has been a eyesore in Coral Gables over the past few years. The Hurricanes have consistently boasted a top-tier defense and talented skill position players but the passing game has lacked any sort of spark or consistency. Head coach Manny Diaz and the Miami faithful are undoubtedly hoping that King can provide that for this program and lead them back to competing atop the ACC.

The big question mark is the jump in competition for King. He’s not played against consistent Power 5 defenses in his career, so how he’ll handle that is a virtual unknown. But with his athletic talent, some nice weapons at The U and offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee’s experience with mobile quarterback’s, it’s a safe bet that King should turn some heads for the Hurricanes this season.
