No. 5 quarterback in college football: Jamie Newman, Georgia

All told, it’s not a 100 percent guarantee that Jamie Newman is the starting quarterback come Week 1 for the Georgia Bulldogs. Kirby Smart brought in another highly touted transfer quarterback, J.T. Daniels, this offseason who will battle with the Wake Forest transfer for the QB1 job. But if Smart is, well, smart, then Newman will be the man filling Jake Fromm’s shoes in Athens.

Though Newman did get banged up a bit towards the end of last season, he still submitted a phenomenal season for the Demon Deacons. He completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while also rushing for 574 yards and six scores. As impressive as those numbers are, they also don’t tell the whole story.

Outside of Sage Surratt, who also missed time due to injury, Wake Forest was largely lacking in terms of their skill position players. Thus, the coaching staff relied on Newman’s dual-threat ability more often than they should have. That is to say that they weren’t able to utilize his cannon of an arm as often as they should have.

New Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken won’t make the same mistake and the Bulldogs have some tantalizing weapons in big-bodied George Pickens and speedy Dominick Blaylock who can play into that. Newman has already put his name on the map but he could be a legitimate star in his lone season with the Dawgs.
