Dodgers trade Ross Stripling to Blue Jays

The Blue Jays acquired Ross Stripling before the deadline

The Toronto Blue Jays had a game Monday afternoon and the front office was busy as well. The team acquired both Robbie Ray and Jonathan Villar during the afternoon after trading for Taijuan Walker last week.

Adding pitching was a clear priority and the team got in another move right before the deadline by acquiring Ross Stripling from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ross Stripling was traded to the Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have now added three starting pitchers as the team looks to make a return to the postseason. Stripling shows up with a 3-1 record, but a 5.61 ERA this season. The run support provided by the Dodgers explains why he threw a combined 11 innings in his last three starts and the Dodgers still managed to win all three games.

Stripling has shown success throughout his career since debuting in 2016 and was an All-Star back in 2018. He now joins a staff that has had its problems. Hence the series of trades for starting pitching.

Hyun-jin Ryu was the top addition this offseason and he is sporting a 2.92 ERA this season. Chase Anderson has looked solid through four starts, while Tanner Roark is struggling and the rest of the rotation is dealing with injuries.

Stripling brings postseason experience with him and will also be reunited with Ryu. Toronto taking two former 2019 Dodgers seems like a solid plan.

The Blue Jays would be a playoff team if the postseason started today as one of the two third-place teams in the new format. But the American League East crown is not yet out of reach and the team entered play Monday one game behind the New York Yankees for second place in the division.

Toronto went all-in and Stripling will complete a brand new trio of pitchers who will look to get the team back to the postseason for the first time since 2016.
