Doug Marrone inexplicably kicks Leonard Fournette on his way out
By John Buhler
Doug Marrone apparently wasn’t sorry to see Leonard Fournette go on Monday.
Leonard Fournette was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars and Doug Marrone held nothing back.
Per The MMQB’s Albert Breer, “Jaguars coach Doug Marrone asked on media Zoom call about attempts to trade Leonard Fournette: “We couldn’t get anything. A fifth, a sixth—anything.”
This was followed up by Breer with a lethal triple skull emoji punctuation. Fournette wasn’t even in another state yet and Marrone had no issues whatsoever throwing dirt on the former top pick.

Will there be karmic implications on Doug Marrone for this savage comment?
To be fair, Marrone has never been one to paint an eloquent picture with this words. He’s about as blunt as they come, a tough former offensive lineman, who has carried his lunchpail mentality shamelessly to the coaching profession. Though a solid head football coach in his own right, he has to be the overwhelming favorite to be the first head coach fired come Black Monday 2021.
Given the difficulty of trying to play a season in the midst of a global pandemic, it would be especially cruel for an owner to can a head coach before the end of the season. But come Black Monday, expect your typical six-to-eight NFL head coaching vacancies to be readily available, especially the one down in Jacksonville. The Jaguars will be a job many candidates will want.
Because the Jaguars are in full-blown rebuilding mode, they should anticipate having a top-tier pick in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. With a top-two selection, they can end up with either Trevor Lawrence of the Clemson Tigers or Justin Fields of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Either blue-chip quarterback prospect could make the Jaguars nationally relevant, arguably for the first time ever.
While Marrone will coach his undermanned roster to the best of his ability, it will be very difficult to win more than a few games without Fournette, Yannick Ngakoue, A.J. Bouye, Calais Campbell, Jalen Ramsey or any other star player of note from the incredible 2017 Sacksonville team. Myles Jack remains, but the record book shows he was down in the first half of the AFC title bout.
Even if owner Shahid Khan has a good rapport with Marrone, he can’t reasonably expect general manager David Caldwell to make a smart selection with Jacksonville’s certain top-two pick in 2021. The best thing Khan can do to keep his franchise in North Florida going forward is blow the whole thing up for one last rebuilding effort. That means a new head coach will have to take over.
Can you imagine a top NFL offensive coordinator like Eric Bieniemy or Brian Daboll getting to be a first-time head coach with Lawrence or Fields as their quarterback. What are the chances Dabo Swinney leaves Clemson, Ryan Day leaves Ohio State or even Lincoln Riley leaves the Oklahoma Sooners for a shot at coaching in the NFL with either Lawrence or Fields as their shining star?
To throw dirt on Fournette when he hasn’t even been released for 24 hours has major karmic implications. He may not have been part of the Jaguars’ plans going forward, but not showing even the slightest sliver of respect for the former LSU Tigers standout and the No. 4 overall pick tells you everything you need to know. Jacksonville is a mess and cleaning house is the only solution.
Hopefully, Marrone’s quote doesn’t come back to haunt him as he looks for a third NFL job.
