Red Sox send Kevin Pillar to the Rockies on trade deadline day

Kevin Pillar’s time with the Boston Red Sox didn’t even last a full season, as he was traded to the Colorado Rockies on Monday. 

Veteran outfielder Kevin Pillar is on the move again. After arriving to the Boston Red Sox prior to the 2020 campaign, it turns out his time at Fenway Park has only lasted 30 games.

On Monday, roughly 30 minutes before the Major League Baseball trade deadline, Boston agreed to send Pillar to the Colorado Rockies. Pillar will now suit up for his fourth club once he makes his way to Denver.

The Red Sox signed Pillar to a one-year contract back in February. Due to play being halted because of the coronavirus pandemic, he didn’t make his Boston debut until play was able to get going in in late July.

In his 30 appearances for the club, the centerfielder hit .274, with four home runs and 13 RBI. Over the weekend, reports surfaced stating there were several teams who had expressed ‘serious’ interest in landing the veteran outfielder’s services.

Colorado took things to a new level on Monday afternoon, beating out the other clubs in on the race to get Pillar to town. The Rockies are currently 17-17, still with hopes of making it to the postseason. Bringing in a veteran like Pillar will only build on their already strong outfield depth.

For Boston, it’s unusual times for the club. Normally they’d be buyers looking to add extra players for a playoff run. However, Boston has struggled immensely this campaign and are in last place of the AL East standings with their 12-22 mark.

Trading Pillar just shows they’re already looking ahead to the future, in hopes of getting back to the top of the AL East to battle it out with the Yankees as soon as possible.
