Here’s why President Trump doesn’t care if the Pac-12 plays, but insists the Big Ten does
Why is President Trump so fixated on the Big Ten playing football but not the Pac-12?
President Trump keeps insisting the Big Ten should open up and play the football season right away. Trump used part of his campaign rallies, he dedicated time on Tuesday to talk with Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren about playing, but for one simple reason, he hasn’t shown the same attention toward the Pac-12 despite not playing this fall for the same reasons as the Big Ten.
And, no, the reasons have absolutely nothing to do with football. So you can take off your tinfoil hat, forget about any conspiracy theories like, “the Pac-12 is irrelevant” or “The Pac-12 just doesn’t care enough like the Big Ten.”
Naturally, President Trump and his administration are using this as a political ploy.
Don’t act so surprised.

President Trump doesn’t care about the Pac-12 the way he does about the Big Ten
The reason Trump has made the Big Ten football season a priority is because he’s seeking re-election and he sees swing states in Big Ten country and how he can flip them in his favor.
Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania are swing states that could determine the election. If President Trump gets involved in the league’s return-to-play initiative, and they do end up playing this season right now, he can claim credit for saving the Big Ten football season.
Then, he can curry favor in Wisconsin, home of the Badgers, Michigan, home of the Wolverines and Spartans, and Pennsylvania, home of the Nittany Lions, on his campaign stops and during the debates.
While some are blaming the president and his administration for the failures in addressing the coronavirus pandemic, he can prop himself up and campaign on “saving college football.”
But he doesn’t care if the Big Ten football season happens. He doesn’t know who Justin Fields is or who Michigan is going to start at quarterback or who replaces Jonathan Taylor at Wisconsin.
The president cares about getting re-elected.
But he doesn’t care about the Pac-12 the same way he does the Big Ten because he’s chalking up the majority of Pac-12 states, with the exception of Utah, as losses. They will be deemed “acceptable losses” which is a political buzzword when it comes to how many deaths are deemed acceptable, such as Trump and Jared Kushner reportedly deemed coronavirus deaths in blue states acceptable because it wouldn’t hurt them politically.
I am not rooting for college football to be canceled. I wish I got to see the Big Ten, Pac-12, MAC, Mountain West, Division II, Division III and the majority of the FCS play this fall. I also wish nearly 200,000 people didn’t die as a result of this pandemic that shows no end in sight.
Now, the football decisions with safety in mind have been turned political. Much like everything else in 2020.
