Browns trade for Jaguars safety Ronnie Harrison for Day 3 pick
The Browns acquired Ronnie Harrison from the Jaguars in a much-needed move.
The Cleveland Browns secondary has been hit with injury after an injury during training camp. Rookie safety Grant Delpit is out for the entire season with a ruptured Achilles and cornerbacks Greedy Williams, Kevin Johnson and M.J. Stewart have all been banged up so far.
Depth in the secondary will be a concern so the Browns decided to go out and make what appears to be a steal of a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Third-year safety Ronnie Harrison is heading to Cleveland in a move that may have Jaguars fans scratching their heads.
The Browns find their replacement for the injured Grant Delpit by trading a fifth-round pick for Ronnie Harrison as the Jaguars continue their roster purge
Harrison is a 2018 third-round pick of the Jaguars and was a regular contributor each of the past two seasons. The former Alabama safety had 71 tackles in 2019 and added two interceptions. He also started 14 games, which is why the price tag for the trade is surprising.
All it took was a fifth-round pick for the Browns to lure away a starting safety from a Jaguars team that may be in for another rebuilding year after also recently moving on from Leonard Fournette.
Harrison seemed like a building block for the Jaguars defense. However, the team is now shedding future salary and Myles Jack is one of the few players to make the cut as a piece for the future.
The Browns hoarded draft picks for several years during a brutal stretch of football and can now use those picks to make trades such as this one. Harrison can slide into the mix right away and may end up starting Week 1 given the rash of injuries in camp.
The Browns are trending up and the Jaguars are going in the opposite direction. But it should be noted both teams finished with a 6-10 record in 2019. So it remains to be seen if Harrison was let go for other unknown reasons.
