Alex Smith is one step closer to making his triumphant return to the field

Alex Smith creeps ever closer to playing his next snap in the NFL after heartbreaking injury.

According to Nick Jhabvala, “Washington is keeping Alex Smith on its initial 53-man roster with the intent of leaving him on the roster and not placing him on injured reserve.” Smith missed all of the 2019 NFL season after succumbing to what should have been a career-ending leg injury suffered back in the 2018 campaign. Somehow, someway, Smith continues to defy all of the odds.

Will we see Alex Smith play a snap for the 2020 Washington Football Team?

It’s a new era for the NFL in the nation’s capital. The club goes by the Washington Football Team these days, as they await their new and inoffensive moniker to be in full effect come 2021. This is Ron Rivera‘s first year as head coach, as well as Jason Wright‘s first season as team president. Though Dwayne Haskins should be the Week 1 starter, we just might see Smith take the field.

If Smith takes a single snap for Washington this fall, he becomes the unanimous choice for NFL Comeback Player of the Year, even if it is a ceremonial victory formation kneel. The man shouldn’t have a leg anymore. It got Joe Theismann-ed on the 33rd anniversary of Theismann’s infamous career-ending injury vs. the New York Giants. The similarities are absolutely shocking.

Smith doesn’t have to play another snap professionally for us to respect him. He could have hung up the spikes and gone into a television or front office role. Smith is a college football legend from his days with the Utah Utes, as well as a multi-time Pro Bowler during his decade-plus NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers, the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington.

With universal praise, Smith can do no wrong this season. Look for him to hold a clipboard and help fellow former first-round pick Haskins get ready to play on fall Sundays. Smith is a pro’s pro if there ever was such a thing. He helped Colin Kaepernick get to a Super Bowl in2012 and showed Patrick Mahomes the ropes in 2018. Smith will make Haskins a better player by default.

Though it may not happen, Smith making the 53-man roster signifies he might play this season.
