Kirk Herbstreit is brought to tears talking racial injustice on College GameDay

Kirk Herbstreit got emotional on the set of ESPN’s College GameDay discussing racial injustice.

The former Ohio State Buckeyes starting quarterback has been a fixture for ESPN’s college football coverage. ESPN’s lead college football analyst has thrived in his role for decades, but we’ve never seen him get this emotional as he did during a video segment on College GameDay Saturday morning when discussing the racial injustice in the United States of America.

Kirk Herbstreit gets understandably choked up discussing a major issue.

“You can’t relate to that if you’re white, but you can listen and you can try to help. Because this is not okay,” said Herbstreit on ESPN’s College GameDay late Saturday morning. Herbstreit would go on to talk about the many things white men like himself don’t even have to consider when they get behind the wheel of a car. How does rampant racial injustice not break your heart?

It’s been the most trying year of all of our lifetimes. We’re in the midst of a global pandemic where we have had to learn to socially distance, work from home and not give the people we love hugs. We’re also in the midst of a social justice movement where racial tensions are at their highest point in decades. Though we’ve come so far since the 1960s, there’s no doubt we have a long way to go.

Herbstreit’s impactful statements on college football’s signature pregame show went out to a wide audience, and will hopefully make an impression on those who need it most. Football is the sport of ultimate meritocracy where the cream rises to the top on the field of play, no matter what color your skin is one what socioeconomic background you hail from, or so we hope. It’s a sport that brings us together.

Herbstreit being brought to tears on live television shows us how serious these issues are.
