Reports link Jadeveon Clowney to Titans, but he claims otherwise

Jadeveon Clowney will reportedly suit up for the Tennessee Titans this NFL season.
The Tennessee Titans have officially won the Jadeveon Clowney free agency sweepstakes.
According to ESPN’s Diana Russini, “Jadeveon Clowney is expected to sign with the Tennessee Titans…He rejoins Mike Vrabel who was on the Texans defensive staff for Clowney’s first 3 years in the league in Houston. The Saints, the other main suitor, made a very strong case. This was a close one.” By reuniting with Mike Vrabel, look for them to wreak havoc on their former employer.

Are the Tennessee Titans now the favorite to win the AFC South in 2020?
This would be a huge get for the Titans because their defense got better because of Clowney’s signing. While he’s never been a sack master in any of his six NFL seasons out of South Carolina, he is adept at stuffing the run and makes any defensive line he is a part of all the more menacing. The New Orleans Saints have to be kicking themselves, as do the Seattle Seahawks.
When it came down to the wire, the Titans apparently won, the Saints placed and the dark horse Baltimore Ravens showed. Though teams like the Cleveland Browns and even his previous employer in the Seattle Seahawks were interested in signing Clowney this offseason, it really felt like it would come down to either the Titans or the Saints. Familiarity with Vrabel and the AFC South won out.
Clowney, however, says teams are still calling and his decision isn’t final. What exactly is he waiting for?

For Tennessee, the Titans may have just surpassed the Indianapolis Colts as the favorite to win the AFC South this year. The Colts are getting too much love for a team that hasn’t won its division since 2014, but people really like head coach Frank Reich and general manager Chris Ballard. Then again, the Titans did play in the AFC Championship game last season before bowing out.
As for the Saints, it’s Super Bowl or bust for New Orleans. They will be entering another rendition of salary cap hell in 2021. Drew Brees isn’t getting any younger and their vise-like grip on the NFC South is quickly slipping with Tom Brady going to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and it being a presidential election year, which has favored the Atlanta Falcons for much of the 21st century.

Clowney would not be a panacea for getting the Titans over the top and into the Super Bowl, but he’ll help them win the division for the first time since 2008. This team needs to recreate the magic from a season ago, but Vrabel seems to be one of the best up-and-coming head coaches in the NFL right now. Maybe the Titans can do better than 9-7 for the first time in five years?
