Jose Ramirez makes play of the day on liner down the third-base line

Ramirez is among the best third basemen in all of baseball, even with a relatively down season offensively by his standards in 2020. The former MVP candidate reminded Cleveland baseball fans exactly what he’s capable of on the diamond Sunday, ranging to his right to stop a liner that was otherwise heading to the left-center field corner. Ramirez had the range and arm strength to not only make the backhanded play, but casually toss the ball over to first base without a hop.

This is the second time in the last two weeks we’ve seen a play similar to that of Brooks Robinson, though the Hall of Famer’s web gem came in Game 1 of the 1970 World Series, so there’s something to be said for timing and pressure. Nolan Arenado, another elite defensive player at the hot corner, stole an extra-base hit away from the Diamondbacks in similar fashion.

Sure, Cleveland deal Mike Clevinger to the San Diego Padres, but in return they received a crop of young MLB-ready talent to aid their division push in 2020. The Indians are flirting with the fine line between small-market contenders and paying those same homegrown stars, and with Francisco Lindor creeping every-closer to a contract year, Mike Chernoff will have to answer some tough questions this offseason about the future of one of the faces of the game.

For now, though, Cleveland is a formidable out for any potential playoff team, and despite voluntarily sending away Clevinger, still possess one of the top pitching staffs in MLB.
