Labor Day is a national holiday, but does the postal service still operate as scheduled?

A better question these days might be “Does the postal service operate, period” thanks to the large decrease in funding to one of our country’s most important institutions, but for the sake of Monday’s holiday, the easy answer is no.

The postal service does not deliver normal mail on most holidays, Labor Day included. Operations will proceed as scheduled on Tuesday just like most businesses nationwide. Priority mail may go through assuming it was sent prior to Labor Day, but even that isn’t guaranteed.

A workaround may be using a secondhand mail delivery source

While the USPS will stick to their schedule, UPS, Amazon and other mail sources may still deliver depending on the type of delivery selected. For instance, Amazon two-day delivery, or Prime delivery, might still go through as scheduled. UPS is less likely but still not impossible if the package was given enough of a head start.

As always, the best way to guarantee package or mail delivery is to go with priority shipping, or give yourself enough time to ensure any mail will be sent to your address long before the holiday. It’s unfortunate, but even mail workers need the occasional holiday.

The best way to see if you’ll have to wait an extra day for package delivery is to track said package via usps.com.
