Austin Hedges breaks up Brady Singer’s no-hit bid in 8th inning
Rookie Brady Singer had a no-hit bid go deep into the game Thursday night.
The Cleveland Indians are having a tough time against the last-place Kansas City Royals this week. The Indians did take the first game, but the Royals took the next two and picked up a dominant 11-1 win Thursday night.
But the real story of the game was rookie pitcher Brady Singer. The former 2018 first-round pick by the Royals carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning. He got two outs in the inning and appeared to be cruising against the bottom of the lineup.
Then new Indians catcher Austin Hedges hit a single and the bid was over just like that.
Brady Singer looks like the real deal
Singer made his MLB debut back in July against the Indians. He went five innings in the debut and only allowed two runs on three hits.
Thursday night was his breakout performance. His final line was eight innings of work with just one hit allowed. He also walked two batters and had eight strikeouts. The rookie was at 119 pitches so it would have been interesting to have seen how far he was allowed to go. The coaching staff seemed committed to letting him chase history.
Hedges being the one to break up the moment sure is something. The backup catcher just came over in a trade from the San Diego Padres and showed up with a .158 batting average in limited action. But it was Hedges, batting eighth in the lineup, who Singer made his only mistake to on the night.
Singer has a bright future ahead of him and is expected to end up being a future ace in Kansas City. His work Thursday night showed Indians fans the Royals are no longer an easy victory.
