The 2020 NFL season kicks off on Thursday night between the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Houston Texans.
The night has finally arrived. After months of uncertainty and anticipation, the 2020 NFL season kicks off on Thursday. The Kansas City Chiefs begin their Super Bowl defense tour against the team they defeated in the AFC Divisional Round earlier this year, the Houston Texans.
In their meeting this past January, the Chiefs appeared lifeless on the field, as the Texans took a 24-0 lead in the first half. However, Houston’s fortunes were crushed after a controversial fake punt call by head coach Bill O’Brien woke up the sleeping giant in the Chiefs, resulting in Kansas City winning 51-31 to advance to the AFC Championship Game.
The Chiefs enter the 2020 season with the same roster as last year, thanks in part to the tremendous work by general manager Brett Veach in locking up quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones to long-term contracts. The players who won’t take the field include running back Damien Williams and offensive tackle Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who opted out of this season. Even so, the Chiefs look as explosive as ever on paper, as they look to clinch a return trip to the Super Bowl in February.
As for the Texans, they also managed to lock in pivotal players this offseason. Quarterback Deshaun Watson and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil both received lucrative extensions prior to the start of the regular-season. There’s one huge vacancy on the team, however. At the start of the 2020 league year, the Texans opted to trade star receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals for running back David Johnson and two mid-round picks after he asked for a contract extension. In his place, the Texans brought in Randall Cobb and Brandin Cooks in hopes of them replacing the four-time Pro Bowler’s production.
