Alvin Kamara’s contract dwarfs all other running backs in guaranteed money
By Scott Rogust
Alvin Kamara now makes the most guaranteed money of any running back in the NFL.
It seemed like yesterday when the New Orlean Saints were shopping running back and impending free agent Alvin Kamara after reported failed contract negotiations. But over a week later, both parties agreed to terms on a five-year, $75 million contract extension, ensuring Kamara is in a Saints uniform for the next six seasons maximum. Even though Kamara doesn’t top the running back charts for total money, he is the leader in one specific category.
Kamara leads all NFL running backs in guaranteed money with $34.3 million. That’s more than what Christian McCaffrey, Dalvin Cook, Derrick Henry, Ezekiel Elliott and Le’Veon Bell were given on their respective deals.
Alvin Kamara is getting a big-time payday for his contributions as a runner and receiver out of the Saints backfield
Even though Kamara leads in guaranteed money, his $15 million annual salary ranks behind McCaffrey, who’s getting paid $16 million a season on his four-year, $64.1 million contract.
Minutes prior to Kamara’s deal being made public, the Minnesota Vikings came out of nowhere and gave Cook a
five-year, $63 million extension
to make sure there are no hard feelings entering the regular-season opener. And then, Kamara essentially stole his spotlight, but it was by no means intentional. The Saints have an important matchup on Sunday afternoon against the
-led Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are looking to take the NFC South crown this season. Having a happy and motivated Kamara on the field improves New Orleans’ chances of retaining this season.
Through 14 games last season, Kamara rushed for 797 yards and five touchdowns on 191 carries, while catching 81-of-97 targets for 533 yards and one touchdown.
There are two happy individuals in the football world after seeing Kamara’s total guaranteed money, and they are Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants and Aaron Jones of the Green Bay Packers, both of whom are due for new contracts in the very near future. They can personally thank the Saints for that, salary cap be damned.
