Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer broke down why Trevor Lawrence is so great during a segment in his new role as an analyst on Fox Sports.

Legendary coach Urban Meyer offered some insight into the intangibles that have allowed Clemson quarterback and the presumptive top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft Trevor Lawrence to have so much success in college, speaking about his competitive spirit, toughness, leadership qualities, and ability to adapt on the fly.

Meyer stressed that outside of the physical abilities and football intelligence, commanding the respect of a locker room is the most important thing a quarterback can do, and Lawrence has done that with his play over the past two seasons, losing just one start.

Urban Meyer, like everyone else, is a big fan of Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence who projects to be the top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The analysts also broke down some film, pointing out Lawrence’s composure on broken plays and his willingness to sacrifice his body for his team. In a close win over North Carolina last year, Lawrence made some crucial plays down the stretch to keep the Tigers undefeated, and Meyer took notice.

He also spoke about last year’s Fiesta Bowl against Ohio State, in which Lawrence was injured in the first half, returned to the field just one play later, and eventually led the Tigers on a game-winning drive in a two-minute drill.

While Lawrence has physical gifts that most quarterbacks can only dream of, Meyer is correct in saying that his intangibles are what sets him apart. He simply understands the game, which admittedly may seem like an obvious statement, but his play makes it seem like he sees things in slow motion.

Lawrence never seems rattled or in over his head, which seems to be what Meyer is getting at. Such a skill is likely to translate well to the NFL level, with Lawrence seemingly the most pro-ready quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck. However, the junior quarterback still has some work to do at Clemson as the top-ranked Tigers look to reach their third consecutive national championship.
