The first matchday of the Premier League season kicks off on Saturday with West Ham hosting Newcastle at London Stadium. After disappointing seasons, both clubs will look to improve their results this year. The Irons finished 16th a season ago, just avoid relegation. While the Magpies finished 13th.
In recent seasons West Ham have invested heavily in their team. The club has gone out and paid record transfer fees for players but have little to show for it. The club expected to finish in the top half of the table last season but just barely avoid relegation. While the Hammers finished in the middle of the tables in goals, they struggled to defend. West Ham allowed 62 goals last year, the fifth most in the Premier League. Manager David Moyes will have to do a better job organizing his team’s gameplan to prevent allowing as many goals this season. If West Ham do not do a better job preventing goals, they will again be in the relegation dogfight.
Newcastle finished 13th last season despite having the fifth-worst goal differential in the Premier League. The Magpies were busy in the transfer market upgrading their squad this season. Newcastle added Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser from relegated Bournemouth. Over the past two seasons, Wilson and Fraser combined for 30 goals and 31 goals for the Cherries. Both players should immediately upgrade the Magpies’ offense. Newcastle also added Jamal Lewis from relegated Norwich, who should slot in as Newcastle’s starting left-back this season. The new additions should help Newcastle avoid relegation again this season.
