The Los Angeles Rams open up the new SoFi Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

Fans got a full taste of NFL action this afternoon. Consider that the appetizer, because the main course takes place on Sunday evening, as the Los Angeles Rams open up the brand new SoFi Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys. The game is taking place, despite the air quality issues caused by the wildfires in California.

These two teams met last season inside the confides of AT&T Stadium, where the Cowboys outmatched the Rams and blew them out 44-21. But these are two completely different squads entering the 2020 season opener.

What to watch for in Cowboys-Rams matchup

Since there was no preseason action due to the coronavirus pandemic, we’ll get our first look at Mike McCarthy’s Cowboys. The former Green Bay Packers head coach sat on the sidelines for a full year, before taking the Dallas gig from Jason Garrett. Dallas has added a ton of players this offseason, including Dontari Poe, Aldon Smith and rookie wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

But all eyes will be on quarterback Dak Prescott, who is playing on the franchise tag this season. Prescott didn’t receive the contract extension he was looking for, so both sides opted to play on a one-year flier and reconvene next offseason. You have to believe Prescott will be extra motivated this season, especially after seeing the contracts Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson received this summer.

The Rams have had a ton of turnover earlier this year as well, mostly due to their lack of sufficient cap space entering the year. Quarterback Jared Goff has his usual targets in Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods, but there’s some uncertainty at the running back position. Todd Gurley was released, and head coach Sean McVay said the team will use a running back committee in his place, which includes Darrell Henderson Jr., Malcolm Brown and rookie Cam Akers.

Los Angeles defense will be powered by defensive tackle Aaron Donald and $105 million cornerback Jalen Ramsey. The rest of the squad remains the same, but with Leonard Floyd replacing Dante Fowler Jr. off the edge.

The Rams host the Cowboys at SoFi Stadium, with kickoff taking place at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC. You can find a live stream of the game if you happen to be nowhere near a television set.
