Alec Mills of the Chicago Cubs made a name for himself after throwing a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday afternoon.

Right-handed pitcher Alec Mills, who was DFA’d by the Kansas City Royals a few years ago, has thrown a no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs as his team beat the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park in Milwaukee, 12-0 on Sunday.

Mills, 28, was making just his 15th career start. He was making his ninth start for the Cubs this season and had been 4-3 with a 4.74 ERA.

This highlights a big day for Chicago sports

The no-hitter was finished just a short while after the Chicago Bears had finished off a comeback win against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Opening Day of the NFL. This was also the second no-hitter to take place in the major leagues this season, following that of Lucas Giolito of the Chicago White Sox. It’s the Cubs’ first no-hitter since Jake Arrieta pitched one against the Reds in 2016 and the first time ever that both Chicago teams had a no-hitter in the same season.

The Cubs had put the game away early thanks to a five-run fourth and a four-run fifth that was filled with Brewers miscues. Infielder Orlando Arcia actually pitched the top of the ninth for the Brewers.

Mills continues to be an important figure in the first-place Chicago Cubs’ starting rotation. Mills earned a rotation spot thanks largely to injuries from Jose Quintana and Tyler Chatwood and got off to a good start, then struggled a little bit before pitching much better of late.

With Yu Darvish dominating, Kyle Hendricks putting together a typical solid season, and Jon Lester up-and-down this year, more performances like that from Mills would go a long way toward this team hanging on to win the NL Central.

Regardless of what Alec Mills does for the rest of his career, this will be something that he’ll always be able to remember. It’s a great highlight for what has been a crazy 2020 season.
