Here’s what the ending of Lovecraft Country episode 5 means for the series.

Warning! This story contains spoilers for Lovecraft Country episode 5.

Episode 5 of Lovecraft Country, “Strange Case,” was filled with winners and losers, and everything was built up from the cliffhangers of episode 4. In case you missed it, Atticus, Letitia and Montrose all channeled their inner Raiders of the Lost Ark to find the cipher pages in Titus Braithwhite’s tomb. They were successful, and also freed the indigenous person, Yahima, who was trapped in Titus’ tomb.

Montrose ended up killing her, but we didn’t know what would happen as a result. Meanwhile, William worked to seduce Ruby, but we didn’t know why until today. For a full breakdown of episode 4, check out our full recap.

And for a breakdown of episode 5, read on below. And don’t forget to check out the Lovecraft Country Chronicles podcast where we discuss the good, the bad, and everything in between from the latest episode.

Lovecraft Country episode 5: Ending explained

At the end of this episode, we learned some pretty big things that contribute to the overall lore of the series. Ruby was definitely the main character of this episode, and that played out in her saga of taking the spell to become a white woman while helping out William.

We found out, at the end, that William was actually Christina — meaning Christina was also using the magical potion to get ahead as a man, seeing as she wasn’t accepted by her family’s secret society as a woman. In her quest to use Ruby to her benefit, she asked Ruby to place a magical stone of some sort in Police Captain Lancaster’s office during a party. The stone had a special symbol on it, which we later saw it again while Atticus was deciphering at a protection spell.

We learned that Lancaster wants to be the head of his lodge since William was supposed to be the head (and Lancaster thinks he killed William), but we don’t really know how Christina plans to one-up him just yet to inherit the lodge. All on top of that, Lancaster mentioned something about Horatio Winthrop’s conservatory in Kentucky being guarded and it having something to do with the solar system model that Christina wants. There’s been no progress about what Hippolyta plans to do with it, but we hope episode 6 will address what she finds out.

When it came to Atticus, Montrose, and Letitia, Atticus was furious at his father for having killed Yahima, and the two didn’t speak for the rest of the episode. Instead, Atticus focused on deciphering Titus Braithwhite’s pages sans Yahima the best he could. It looks like he was able to crack most of the code, including finding one spell in particular that spelled out “D.I.E.” At the end of the episode, he called someone to find out what in the world was going on. Atticus was very shaken up, and whatever he discovered, we’re sure it’s going to have a profound effect on how he sees magic, monsters and everything else in the future.

So, we’re left we even more threads to unravel, and we’re now halfway through the season. What’s left to be answered is: What will Christina do to gain control of the lodge over the police captain? What will Ruby do now that she knows Christina used her? And whose side will Atticus take now that he’s made this shocking unknown discovery?

Hopefully, the answers to that and more will be addressed in the final five episodes of Lovecraft Country.
