Ryan Fitzpatrick. 2. Pick Analysis. Miami Dolphins. player. 59. Scouting Report. QB

There are great games with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback and then there are games like what we saw out of him in Week 1 vs. the New England Patriots. Despite quarterbacking the Miami Dolphins to five wins last season when they should have won zero, the sooner Brian Flores hands the reins to No. 5 overall pick Tua Tagovailoa, the faster Miami can contend in the AFC East race.

There was absolutely nothing FitzMagical about the Dolphins starting quarterback today. His epic beard and dad bod may have been lucious, but he only completed 20-of-30 passes for 191 yards and three patented YOLO interceptions. His 6.4 yards per attempt weren’t enough to keep pace with Cam Newton making his first start for the Evil Empire up in Foxborough.

This afternoon was a microcosm of why Fitzpatrick is only a stop-gap starter at best. The Harvard graduate may have achieved a 48 on the Wonderlic coming out of school, but he’ll throw a dumb interception as if his life depended on it. Though Tagovailoa may not be ready for his big opportunity, keep in mind he made the most of it as a true freshman at Alabama back in 2017.

Flores may go with a ball-control offense to help bring Tagovailoa along. With the Patriots and the Buffalo Bills looking pretty good through Week 1, Miami may want to accept that the Dolphins aren’t going to the playoffs this year. So getting ample starting experience for Tagovailoa may be the best thing for them. If Fitzpatrick plays this badly for Chan Gailey, then nobody can help him.
