NFL: 4 quarterbacks who should be benched before next week
By John Buhler
Who cares if you beat the lousy Detroit Lions in an empty stadium on the final play in Week 1? There was too much Georgia Bulldogs action on that Matthew Stafford to D’Andre Swift dropped touchdown pass for it to have counted. There are people who are honest with themselves and progress through live because of it and then there’s the Chicago Bears with Mitchell Trubisky.
It was an epic comeback, but one the cardiac Lions almost ripped away from the Monsters of the Midway. The only constants throughout the game were Trubisky’s poor quarterback play and Matt Patricia’s poor coaching. While it is a heartbreaking loss for Stafford and the Lions, they’re used to it because they’re the Lions. As for the Bears, it’s time to bring a Super Bowl MVP off the bench.
In Trubisky’s latest on-field masterpiece, he completed 20-of-36 passes for 242 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Though he did come alive in the fourth quarter, as the Bears outscored the Lions 21-0 in the final frame, it was another pitiful first three quarters for him and the Bears offense. While it was a great way to eke out a victory, most NFL teams aren’t the Lions.
With Foles, there will be more precision in the passing game. He is adept at running the RPO off this scheme and finding the open man for short-to-medium gains over and over again. With Trubisky, maybe the Bears can win the NFC North again and fall on Wild Card Weekend? With Foles, they can somehow convince themselves they can get to Super Bowl 55 down in Tampa.
