Jets place Le’Veon Bell on IR, out for at least three weeks
Le’Veon Bell seemed sure to miss multiple games, and the Jets have confirmed it by placing him on IR.
New York Jets head coach Adam Gase expressed regret for leaving Le’Veon Bell in last Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills, as he clearly had suffered a hamstring injury. On Tuesday the severity of the injury was confirmed, as Kim Jones of NFL Network reported Bell was placed on IR.
The new IR rules this year means Bell is eligible to return in as little as three weeks, or as soon as Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals as it applies here.
Frank Gore would be the next man up in the Jets’ backfield. But Josh Adams had a rushing touchdown and two receptions in Week 1 against the Bills, and rookie Lamical Perine is in line to return from an ankle injury soon.
This won’t help Bell and Gase’s relationship
Bell’s relationship with Gase has been strained from the start, with indications Gase was not on board with the decision to pony up and pay Bell. Trade possibilities have lingered in the background, and Bell remaining in the game longer than he should have in Week 1 seems fishy on the surface. Bell was also not happy with Gase pulling him from a camp scrimmage…due to concern over a possible hamstring issue.
Gase didn’t even try to play up any idea he wasn’t aware of the situation, as a head coach might in pointing to other things going on mid-game, saying he was “mad at myself” for leaving Bell in against Buffalo after he was injured in the first half.
If things go off the rails for the Jets, Gase and Bell may both not be long for the team. Gase is an easy bet to be fired in-season, while Bell could make his exit with a trade before the deadline once he’s healthy.
