NFL power rankings, Week 2: Chiefs, Ravens are cut above
The Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens are the class of the NFL early on. The states of New York and New Jersey, however, wear total shame.
The Jets didn’t bother to show up in Buffalo. If they’d like to make it up to their fans, they should keep Adam Gase from showing up in Week 2.
The Giants struggled defensively, turned the ball over and can’t block. Otherwise, things went fine.
When you let Mitchell Trubisky score 21 points in the fourth quarter, you move to the 30s.
Great season-opening win for the Jaguars. They move up a few spots after Gardner Minshew was nearly perfect against the Colts.
Love the guts. Down 17-0 as the underdog, Washington didn’t quit. Dwayne Haskins is still rough, but the front seven is legit.
Better days are ahead for the Bengals. Joe Burrow missed some open receivers, but he showed moxie, mobility and the ability to hang tough in a shrinking pocket.
Carolina is going to be in a ton of shootouts. The offense is fun.
The defense needs to tighten against the run, and Ryan Fitzpatrick crushed their hopes with three interceptions. Can’t live with turnovers in Foxborough.
The offense struggled and the Broncos still lost despite Stephen Gostkowski missing four kicks. Now, to Pittsburgh.
Mistakes galore, an absurd fake punt and Baker Mayfield making bad reads. Cleveland football is back in its glory.
There’s no shame in being blown out by Kansas City. The Texans’ path doesn’t get any easier, though. This week? The Ravens.
Josh Jacobs is great, Henry Ruggs looks legit and the both need to keep rolling, because the defense is a serious weak spot.
This win was the football equivalent of driving blind through an intersection and making it out clean. You got very lucky, and probably won’t next time. Don’t advise it.
The Chargers need more, far more, from Tyrod Taylor. The offense was pathetic despite weapons all over.
The Falcons registered more than 500 yards, Matt Ryan threw for 450, and the game wasn’t close. Not a great sign for the defense.
What a pathetic game from the Eagles. They fall six spots and frankly, maybe deserved to drop more. A 17-0 lead blown to Washington, with Carson Wentz turning the ball over three times.
Losing to Los Angeles is acceptable. The bigger issue is losing Blake Jarwin for the season, and Leighton Vander Esch for at least a month.
The Rams only won by three points over Dallas, but they outplayed the Cowboys all night. Sean McVay finally moved away from strict 11 personnel, and it helped.
Cam Newton ran for 75 yards and two touchdowns against Miami. The foot looks good. However, he only threw for 155 yards. Can the Patriots, and Newton, keep playing like this?
If Kirk Cousins isn’t throwing more than nine times in the first half against a good team, the Vikings have more problems than their lackluster secondary.
Ugly, but a win. Imagine if the Titans could actually kick, they’d really be cooking.
Arizona was my preseason sleeper in the NFC (seriously, look it up) and we saw why Sunday. Kyler Murray is legit, DeAndre Hopkins is incredible and the defense has athletes.
Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski looked like two old guys trying to play a young man’s sport. We’ll see if that changes against Carolina this week. I suspect it will.
The Bills did their job. They beat the Jets. Josh Allen looked fine. Ho-hum.
The 49ers lost to a good team at home. They don’t lose a ton of equity here, yet. Still, can Jimmy Garoppolo please make some big throws?
Pittsburgh held Saquon Barkley to six yards on 15 carries. Can’t wait to see the Steelers and Ravens twice this season.
Aaron Rodgers looks furious, the Packers look very good, and the NFC North looks like a damn tough hill for the other three teams.
Russell Wilson threw four incomplete passes on 35 attempts. D.K. Metcalf is leveling up. The defense has a new epicenter in Jamal Adams. Look out.
Drew Brees was average, but the Saints did more than enough defensively to handle the much-hyped Buccaneers. A strong start.
Lamar Jackson torched the Browns any only ran seven times. The defense allowed six points and teed off on Baker Mayfield. What a performance.
The Chiefs are defending champs and looked like it against Houston. Now, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Kelechi Osemele powering the run game, they’re even more dangerous.
