Dylan McCaffrey opting out after losing Michigan QB competition to Joe Milton
By John Buhler
Dylan McCaffrey has opted out and plans to transfer from Michigan football.
After losing the starting job, quarterback Dylan McCaffrey has opted out and will transfer.
According to Angelique S. Chengelis of The Detroit Free Press, “Michigan quarterback Dylan McCaffrey is opting out of the upcoming season and is looking to transfer.” This comes on the heels of the Big Ten agreeing unanimously to play football this fall, beginning on Oct. 23-24. McCaffrey has two years of eligibility left after losing the starting job to Joe Milton.
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic show us how much the Michigan football staff has been raving about Milton. He won the starting job over McCaffrey and Cade McNamara. Milton will be the guy to replace Shea Patterson as the Wolverines starting quarterback for at least this year until five-star J.J. McCarthy arrives on campus, probably in January as an early enrollee.
What does Dylan McCaffrey’s opt-out/transfer combo mean for all involved?
For Michigan, this probably isn’t the worst thing in the world. While quarterback play has been lackluster at best during the entirety of the Jim Harbaugh era in Ann Arbor, perhaps Milton is a better fit in offensive coordinator Josh Gattis‘ system. All we know is Patterson certainly was not and McCaffrey was in the driver’s seat to earn this starting job, but came up short.
As for McCaffrey, he may end up going back to the West Coast, as his father Ed McCaffrey and older brother Christian McCaffrey starred for the Stanford Cardinal. However, Cardinal head coach David Shaw has had turbulence at the quarterback position since Andrew Luck left the program. Even K.J. Costello lost his starting job in Palo Alto. Maybe Stanford isn’t the place for him?
With two years of eligibility left, McCaffrey will look to join a program where he can win the starting job. It may have to be for a Power 5 team not as high-profile as Michigan or potentially at the Group of 5 level. However, it’s not like this year would have counted towards his eligibility anyway. Maybe getting out of Michigan and beginning his second college chapter is the way to go?
If Milton does provide the spark that has been missing from the Wolverines offense since Harbaugh took over, maybe they can finally beat the dreaded Ohio State Buckeyes in “The Game” again? McCarthy coming in as a part of the 2021 recruiting class may not afford Milton a ton of leash, but it’s now his job in 2020. Here’s to him making the most of his newfound opportunity.
McCaffrey opting out and transferring may signify he’s not cut out to lead a Power 5 blue-blood.
