Enes Kanter defends Celtics after Marcus Smart report
Enes Kanter wants you to know the Celtics locker room is just fine.
Screams were exchanged and objects were thrown in the Celtics locker room after their loss to the Heat on Thursday night.
Boston big man Enes Kanter went on Twitter to assure fans and media alike that “no one can split our family up.”
That was after multiple NBA reporters tweeted about sparks that flew in the locker room between Marcus Smart and his teammates. Boston Globe reporter Gary Washburn even used the word “imploding” to describe the Celtics in the aftermath of their Game 2 defeat.
Whether it was Washburn’s description or the general discussion around the postgame argument, Kanter called out “b—s— rumors” and insisted “this group of guys is one of the best I’ve been around.”
The Celtics have to erase a 2-0 deficit to Miami.
If you’re a Celtics fan, you’re sitting here hoping Kanter is right about the team being read to “keep fighting & grinding.” They’re going to need to do just that if they hope to overturn a 2-0 hole in the series.
Boston is in that hole because they’ve blown two straight leads in the Eastern Conference Finals.
In Game 1, the Celtics had a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter but let Miami outscore them 35-23 in that final period. They ended up losing in overtime 117-114.
The story in Game 2 was frustratingly familiar. Boston’s lead at halftime was 13 points and they had built an advantage as large as 17 in the first half. Again Miami came surging back and again the Celtics capitulated. The Heat prevailed 106-101.
That’s when Smart and other teammates appeared to argue in the locker room with emotions running high.
The flashpoint will either inspire a Celtics comeback in the series or signal the very implosion Washburn described. We all have to wait to find out.
