LSU football awards JaCoby Stevens with legendary No. 7 (Video)
LSU football will have a new No. 7 after awarding JaCoby Stevens with the legendary jersey.
The No. 7 jersey has become a coveted tradition for LSU football and it’ll have a new player carry on the legacy in 2020.
On Friday, the Tigers revealed JaCoby Stevens as their newest No. 7 after losing wide receiver JaMarr Chase to the NFL.
Along with the announcement was a nifty video highlighting Stevens’ leadership and outstanding play.
JaCoby Stevens will wear the No. 7 for LSU football as a senior.
On his LSU roster page, the Tigers call Stevens “the undisputed leader of the Tigers,” a description that justifies his swap of the No. 3 for the No. 7 more than anything else.
He’s also a top-notch safety. In 2019, Stevens was second on the team with 92 tackles while adding nine tackles for loss, five sacks, three interceptions and six pass breakups. SEC Coaches made him an All-SEC second-team player.
Why is the No. 7 so special? The players who have worn it since the mid-2000s have set an incredibly high bar.
Linebacker Ali Highsmith led LSU in tackles on their way to the 2007 national title. Patrick Peterson went on to keep the No. 7 in style by winning the Thorpe and Bednarik Awards. Tyrann Mathieu was a Heisman contender in 2011 while wearing the jersey.
The Tigers offered running back Leonard Fournette the No. 7 before he even signed in the class of 2014 and he lived up to the legacy by racking up 3,830 yards in 32 games.
After Fournette left for the NFL, wide receiver D.J. Clark wore the jersey in 2017 and led the SEC in punt return touchdowns.
Most recently, Grant Delpit continued the Thorpe Award-winning tradition in 2019.
Chase was selected to wear No. 7 after winning the Biletnikoff Award last year but his NFL declaration left it vacant with the season fast approaching.
